Mission & Goals
Mission
The Race Matters Consortium is a national multi-system initiative to prevent and reduce
racial and ethnic disproportionality in the child welfare system.
Its members comprise a national think tank of concerned experts in research,
social work practice, public policy, and philanthropy who critically examine
the issues related to racial and ethnic disparities and influence policy
and practice through education and consultation.
Goals
- a. Develop and maintain an effective organizational structure by:
- establishing and maintaining membership to sustain our mission;
- developing by-laws of membership including a formal decision-making
mechanism; and
- securing resources.
- b. Create a body of knowledge of issues that impact racial
disproportionality by:
- obtaining a better understanding of the relationship between child
maltreatment and child welfare system entry through the exploration of the influence of community
ecology;
- systematically examining issues at decision points throughout the
child welfare system;
- learning more about how other systems impact child welfare system
involvement; and
- gaining a better understanding of what creates positive results and
reduces negative results.
- c. Promote a nationwide awareness of racial/ethnic disproportionate representation
and outcomes in the Child Welfare System at multiple levels by:
- identifying key issues impacting racially disproportionate
representation and outcomes in the Child Welfare System and promising solutions;
- translating the current knowledge base into user-friendly language
for multiple audiences;
- establishing collaborations at the national and local levels; and
building public will at the community level
- d. Develop and advance a national action agenda to address racial/ethnic disproportionate
representation and outcomes in the Child Welfare System environment.
